Eight years have approved because the Mayhem Wave forever modified the world to a blend of science and magic, and since Harrison Cody rescued twenty-eight adolescent girls from individual traffickers. Now they are disappearing, and he suspects their previous captors, followers of an entity of supreme power and evil, of an elaborate revenge plan. Dorothy O’Neill, another of Harrison’s used daughters, though from very different circumstances, has taken five-year-old Melody Cody, Harrison’s only child by blood, less than her wing. As the lacking persons crisis intensifies, Dorothy discovers she and Melody are targets as well. When the NCSA head office are attacked with a dark wizard using a colony of giant bats, each of them flee in to the woods to evade catch.

Separated by hundreds of miles, and without method of communication, Harrison and Dorothy become entangled in the plans of a monster who desires to improve the world once more at the cost of all they keep dear.
