On March 19, 1928, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll introduced Amos ‘n’ Andy, which went on to become one of the most popular and longest-running programs in radio history. During the elevation of its reputation, almost the complete country listened to the fifteen-minute, Monday-through-Friday escapades of Amos ‘n’ Andy. Department stores piped in the broadcasts so shoppers wouldn’ about Amos ’n’ Andy, Vol. 7 t miss an event, and concert halls planned their features to get rid of before the beginning of Amos ‘n’ Andy so they too could pipe it in.

Amos and Andy ran the Fresh-Air Taxi Company, using the more stable, married Amos doing a lot of the function even though Andy chased women. In 1943, after 4,091 quarter-hour shows, it switched to a half-hour every week comedy. While the five-a-week show often acquired a calm, easygoing feeling, the new version was a brassy Hollywood-style production, complete with a studio room audience, full ensemble of supporting actors, and a complete orchestra. Many of the half-hour applications were written by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, afterwards the writing team for Keep It to Beaver and The Munsters. In the new version, Amos became a minor character towards the more dominant Andy and Kingfish duo.
