First posted in 1843, “A Christmas Carol” is arguably Dickens’s most well-known and available work. An instantaneous success ever since its initial publication, it’s the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a cool, bitter, aged miser who despises Christmas and everything about it. When the ghost of Scrooge’s previous business partner, Jacob Marley, visits him on Xmas Eve exactly seven years after his death, Scrooge is usually challenged to rethink his ways before it really is as well late. Over the course of the night he is seen by three more spirits Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, yet to Come. These visits help Scrooge to see the mistake in his ways changing him by the end of the story into a kinder and gentler soul. Inspired by his encounters as a child, Dickens’s “A Xmas Carol” highlights the plight of the lower course in 19th hundred years England via an enduring and eventually heart-warming tale.
