Dad Knows Best was a situation comedy built throughout the Anderson family and life about Maple Street in the fictitious Midwestern city of Springfield. Robert Little starred as Jim Anderson, head of family members, husband of Margaret, and an insurance man by job. The couple acquired three kids. The weekly radio script, about Father Knows Greatest, Vol. 1 although played for laughs, provided words of knowledge and “dishes for domestic joy” that American family members could identify with. Jim’s understanding wife Margaret was the picture of domesticity as mom to Betty (aged eighteen), Bud (sixteen), and Kathy (ten).

Father Knows Best premiered in radio in 1949 and lasted until 1954 when it made its Television debut. For the radio show, Margaret was played by June Whitely and Jean Vander Pyle (most widely known for providing the tone of voice of Wilma in the animated series The Flintstones), Betty was performed by Rhoda Williams, Bud by Ted Donaldson, and Kathy by Norma Jean Nilsson.
