Humph – bandleader, cartoonist, writer, chairman of BBC Radio 4’s I AM SORRY I actually Haven’t A Hint, president of the Culture for Italic Handwriting and doyen of jazz trumpeters. In conversation with June Knox-Mawer, Humphrey Lyttelton reflects on his extraordinary lifestyle; from schooldays at Eton and playing away ‘Roll Out the Barrel’ outdoors Buckingham Palace on VE Day time, to the forming of his band in 1948 and his emergence as ‘the godfather of British jazz’. In his extremely varied profession he was a cartoonist for the Daily Mail, a journalist for Punch as well as formed his very own record company.
