Summary:

The first science fiction compiled by a Black woman, Kindred has become a cornerstone of Black American literature. This mix of slave memoir, dream, and historic fiction is usually a book of wealthy literary difficulty. Having just celebrated her 26th birthday in 1976 California, Dana, an African-American woman, is abruptly and inexplicably wrenched through period into antebellum Maryland. After conserving a drowning white boy there, she finds herself staring in to the barrel of the shotgun and is transported back again to the present just in time to save her life. During numerous such time-defying episodes using the same son, she realizes the task she’s been provided: to protect this youthful slaveholder until he can father her personal great-grandmother. Writer Octavia E. Butler skillfully juxtaposes the critical issues of slavery, human being privileges, and racial prejudice with an exciting science fiction, romance, and historical experience. Kim Staunton’s narrative skill magically transforms the listener’s earphones into an audio time machine.
