Summary:
Produced by Blake Edwards (of Red Panther fame), Richard Diamond, Private Detective found NBC radio in 1949 starring film actor and crooner Dick Powell.
Powell had recently played Philip Marlowe in the popular RKO film Murder My Nice and jumped in the chance to play a suave detective on radio. Richard Diamond was a lighthearted New York-based personal eye who appreciated ribbing the cops and performing tracks to his millionairess partner, Helen Asher (performed by Virginia Gregg). It’s theme “Leave about Richard Gemstone, Personal Detective, Collection 1 it to Like” was whistled by Powell at the start of each event.
Powell’s firm (Four Star Television) produced a TV edition of Richard Diamond, Personal Detective for CBS in 1957. David Janssen, who later gain fame as Dr. Richard Kimble within the Fugitive was cast as TV’s Richard Diamond. Sam, Diamond’s gorgeous secretary in it series, was just shown from your waist down.
