Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is among the most severe. In the small Minnesota city of Wayzata, an entire family continues to be killed-husband, wife, two daughters, canines.

There’s something about the picture that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts-it appears a lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s observed in medication killings sometimes. But that is a seriously upscale town, and the spouse was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t appear to fit.
