It’s been three years because the Virgil State High School Massacre. Three years since my greatest friend, Sarah, was killed within a bathroom stall during the mass shooting. Everyone understands Sarah’s tale—that she passed away proclaiming her beliefs.

But it’s incorrect.

I know because I used to be with her when she died. I didn’t state anything then, and folks got hurt because of it. Today Sarah’s parents are publishing a book about her, which means this might be my last possibility to create the record straight…but I’m not really the only survivor with a tale to tell in what do—and didn’t—happen that day.

Except Sarah’s martyrdom is important to a lot of people, individuals who don’t take kindly to what I’m trying to do. And the more I learn, the less certain I am about what’s right. I don’t know very well what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up….
