On a wintertime morning hours in 1990, Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota picked up the Bismarck Tribune. On leading page, a small girl gazed in to the range, shedding a rip. The headline: Foster home kids beaten-and nobody’s assisting. Dorgan, who was simply dealing with American Indian tribes to secure assets, was distressed. He flew to the Standing Rock Indian Booking to meet up with five-year-old Tamara and her grandfather. They truly became friends. Then she vanished. And he would seek out about The Girl in the Photograph: THE REAL Story of the Native American Kid, Lost and Found in America her for many years until they finally discovered each other again. This book is normally her story, from childhood for this, but it is also the story of the people and a nation. More than one in three American Indian/Alaskan Native children reside in poverty. AI/AN children are disproportionately in foster treatment and awaiting adoption. Suicide among AI/AN youngsters age groups 15 to 24 is 2.5 times the national rate. How have we allowed this to happen?
