Summary:
An exhilarating, original novel, set in Brazil, Idaho, and space, about an obsessive librarian, a down-at-heel author, and a disgraced historian who go on the search for a mystical, life-changing book–and find it.
The Infinite Future is certainly a mindbending book that melds two page-turning tales in one. In the 1st, we meet three damaged people, joined by an obsession having a neglected Brazilian science-fiction author named Salgado-MacKenzie. There’s Danny, a article writer who’s been scammed with a about The Infinite Long term: A Book shady literary prize committee; Sergio, journalist switched sub-librarian in São Paulo; and Harriet, an excommunicated Mormon historian in Sodium Lake Town, who years back corresponded using the reclusive Brazilian writer. The motley trio sets off to discover his identification, and whether his fabled masterpiece–never published–actually is present. Did his queries into the accurate nature of the universe yield something so tremendous that his brain was blown for good?
In the second half, Wirkus gives us the lost masterpiece itself–the actual text from the Infinite Future, Salgado-MacKenzie’s wonderfully weird magnum opus. The two stories merge in surprising and profound methods. Part science-fiction, part academic satire, and component book-lover’s pursuit, this wholly primary novel captures the heady method that stories inform and mirror our lives.
