This gothic story by Washington Irving appeared in his assortment of essays and short stories titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Along with its partner piece ‘Rip Vehicle Winkle’, ‘The Star of Sleepy Hollow’ is probably the earliest examples of American fiction with long lasting popularity. The tale is defined in 1790 in the countryside around the Dutch negotiation of Tarry Town within an isolated glen called Sleepy Hollow.
