The Machine Halts is a science fiction story. It explains a world in which almost all humans have lost the capability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a ‘cell’, with all bodily and spiritual requirements met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Most human beings welcome this development, as they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand encounter. People neglect that humans created the Machine, and treat it like a mystical entity whose needs supersede their personal. Those who usually do not accept the deity of the Machine are seen as ‘unmechanical’ and so are threatened with “Homelessness”. Ultimately, the device apocalyptically collapses, and the civilization of the Machine comes to an end.
