In the foreseeable future as Bova here imagines it, Earth can be an ecological nightmare, and humanity may go the way from the dinosaurs. But over head orbits salvation. A huge metallic island in space, the Trikon place conducts genetic research too dangerous to be done on earth-research that could save the planet.

Yet Commander Dan Tighe discovers the Trikon’s major task is espionage. Its international crew is split into warring factions; its scientists-consumed by greed, lust, and drugs-run the laboratory for their own gain.
