Summary:
A humorous account by English article writer Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The three men are based on Jerome himself (the narrator J.) and two real-life close friends, George Wingrave (who become a older manager in Barclays Loan company) and Carl Hentschel (the founder of a London printing business, called Harris in the book), with whom he frequently took boating travels. Your dog, Montmorency, can be entirely fictional but, “as Jerome admits, created out of this area of internal consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains some the dog.” The trip can be a typical boating holiday of that time period within a Thames camping skiff. This was just after industrial boat traffic around the Top Thames had become extinct, replaced with the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.
