When Rob Sheffield moved to NEW YORK in the summer of 2001, he was a young widower trying to start out a new existence in a new town. Behind, before, was his lifestyle as a gladly married rock and roll critic, with a wife he adored, and an enormous collection of combine tapes that captured their lifestyle together. And then, super fast, all he had left had been the tapes.

One night, some about CHANGE Bright Eyes: A Karaoke Love Story friends dragged him to a karaoke bar in the Western Village. A night out was a rare event for Rob back then.

Somehow, that evening in a karaoke bar converted into many nights, in lots of karaoke bars. Karaoke became a means out, ways to escape days gone by, a way to be someone else if only for the period of a three-minute song. Discovering the sublime ridiculousness of karaoke, even though he couldn’t bring a tune, he began to find his voice.

And the unexpected happened. A voice on the air got Rob’s interest. The voice emerged attached to a female who was unlike anyone he’d ever met before. A woman who could name every constellation in the sky, and every Depeche Mode B side. A woman who could belt out a mean Bonnie Tyler.
