Ruler Markon of Montalier reaches the end of his tether. His boy, Prince Parrin, is normally afflicted with a fairly unpleasant curse that slaughters, maims, or brutally attacks any female with whom he so much as flirts. Following the rumour that sweeps round the kingdom, promising that any female breaking the ‘curse’ will meet the requirements to marry the prince, there is no shortage of prepared volunteers. Unfortunately, there is also no lack of bodies piling up.

Markon needs to take action, but what? Can a going to enchantress from Avernse help, or is certainly she simply another accident waiting to happen? And can Markon be able to give her up to his boy if she will break the curse?
